7D VARIETY Donates 57,000 Packs of Energy Dates to Philadelphia Hunger Relief Organization During COVID-19

Health startup 7D VARIETY makes a generous donation of date fruits to help sustain communities in Philadelphia amidst the pandemic
Philadelphia, PA, Apr. 30 - Fair access to nutrition is at the heart of 7D VARIETY’s mission. Founder of 7D VARIETY, Ammar Alhelal, has put forth this commitment by donating $128,000 worth of Energy Dates to Philabundance, Philadelphia’s prominent hunger relief organization and member of Feeding America’s nationwide network of food banks. This donation provides a much needed supply of nutritious emergency-food, with 57,000 packs of dates to be distributed through partner locations around Philadelphia.
As the global pandemic lingers, local food initiatives are crucial to the health and survival of low-income communities. Admittedly, lockdown measures across the country have disrupted thousands of lives and local business operations. As a result, income loss and food supply shortages pose additional threats to the health of our communities. While some people have the means to stock up on food and supplies, others struggle to keep their lives afloat.
“In times like these, no one should have to choose between illness and hunger,” said Founder Ammar Alhelal. “We must gather and share our resources for the sake of human life.”
Indeed, the date palm tree is an abundant natural resource on which the Middle Eastern diet relies heavily, both as a cultural symbol and an essential source of nutrition. Harvested, gathered, packaged, and shipped from Saudi Arabia to Philadelphia, this native desert fruit provides sustenance in a time of scarcity. “We rarely get offers of dried fruit,” said Laura Pennington, Donations Associate at Philabundance.
As a reference for donors, the organization specifies a list of most needed food items, prioritizing those with high demand and high nutritional value. Fortunately, the benefits of dates integrate many of the criteria on the list and beyond. Available studies show that dates are rich in fiber, antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, they support digestive, heart and immune functions, while providing a feeling of satiety and essential carbs for energy.
Evidently, 7D VARIETY’s donation aligns simultaneously with Philabundance’s mission to end hunger, and with the nutrition needs critical for sustaining life during a global pandemic.
Philabundance is the Delaware Valley’s largest hunger relief organization, driving hunger from our communities today and ending hunger for good. In 2019, it distributed more than 26 million pounds through a network of 400 partners, and partnerships with hospitals, schools, libraries and other service providers. Philabundance serves more than 90,000 people each week, 30 percent of whom are children, 16 percent of whom are seniors, and other people served include college students, single parents and the working class.
