Enjoying a daily cup of coffee (or “cup o’ joe,” as it were) is becoming an increasingly popular habit among Americans. In fact, in a Reuter’s study, 64% of Americans consume a cup or more of coffee on a daily basis. The majority of these folks, nearly 80%, prefer to have their coffee at home. Whether we consume our daily cup of caffeinated deliciousness at home, on the go, or at a local café, one thing remains constant: a sweet treat rounds out the entire experience.
As we know, sweet treats paired with coffee include items such as pastries, croissants, fruit breads (like banana or pumpkin bread), biscotti, or cookies. These foods are not only high in fat and processed sugar, but these calorically-dense treats can increase one’s risk of developing heart disease, type 2 diabetes, and unintentional weight gain. Because so many Americans have coffee on a daily basis, we can see how this could very easily lead to various health concerns.
